Hello guys, one of my readers emailed me a couple of days ago and asked If I could suggest something to improve his email writing skills?
He says that he is very good at work and programming but sucks on writing emails, and because of that, he never gets the visibility he deserved, resulting in no promotion or career growth from last 11 years.
This sounds to be a prevalent problem, especially among programmers and developers whose native language is not English, and who have never attended any business or email writing course.
In fact, it was a problem for me as well, but I slowly picked it up though I am still far behind with many people I know who have excellent email communication skills.
To be honest, in today's corporate and online world, where we work globally and interact with clients, users, and fellow programmers distributed around the world, email is one of the most essential tools. This becomes even more important for career growth.
For example, if you want to become a Software architect or Project Manager then you bound to have excellent written communication skills, which is basically writing solid emails.
Very few people can see how you look or how you speak, but many people will read your email, and they will make a perception about you by reading your emails.
An email from an experienced and authoritative person always makes the impression that he is someone who runs the show or takes a decision. The same goes for a senior developer who creates the impression that he knows what he is talking about.
Even I had instances where people with excellent email writing skills but less experience sound like project leaders purely because of what they write and how they present facts or information.
As John mentioned in his classic Soft Skills book that you, yourself, is the in-charge of your career, and if you think that this is the one skill that is holding you back, then today is the excellent time to start thinking about how you can improve your professional email writing skill.
